  1. When is Orientation?

  2. What do I need to bring with me to orientation?

    • Student ID number - you will be required to have this number in order to get your Hokie Passport (ID)
    • students, be sure to bring your driver's license - you will need it for the Hokie Passport (ID) process
    • two wallet-size facial photos needed for your college session on Day Two
    • comfortable cool clothes - orientation is casual
    • alarm clock - no wake-up service!
    • a fan - no A/C in residence hall!
    • a washcloth - all other linen provided
    • walking shoes - expect lots of walking
    • luggage on wheels
  3. What is the parking situation?

The only parking lot designated for Orientation is the Lane Stadium Lot. A shuttle will run from that lot to the Squires Student Center. There is ample parking for Orientation.

  4. If traveling a long distance, can we register the day before?

No, we do not offer early registration for lodging or for orientation. We bring approximately 1000 people to campus per day, so overlaps are not feasible. The night's lodging that is included in the orientation is for the 1st night of orientation during your assigned session.

If arriving early, you might want to explore the Blacksburg area.

  5. Do parents/guests staying off campus pay an orientation fee?

There is no fee for parents/guests. Parents/guests only pay for lodging (on or off campus) and meals (optional). To purchase on campus lodging and/or meals, visit Summer Conferences.

  6. Are parents required to come?

No, but highly encouraged - we do have a full schedule of events for parents.

  7. Does the program include activities for younger siblings?

There are no planned activities, but siblings are welcome.

  8. Can siblings stay in the room?

Younger siblings can stay with parents at no additional cost. We suggest a sleeping bag as we do not have roll-a-way beds. See the Student Programs web site for more information about lodging and meals during orientation.

  9. Will I be able to choose my roommate for orientation?

No, assignments are made during orientation check-in. The roommate you are assigned during orientation will not be your roommate for the school year. Fall roommate assignments for the school year are on-line by late July.

  10. Will my roommate from orientation be the same in the fall?

No, unless you both visit the housing office and make this request.

  11. While attending orientation, can students stay with off-campus friends?

No, the overnight experience in the residence hall is an important part of the new students' orientation experience.

  12. When will we be finished with the program on Day Two?

Most college/department programs end by 4:00 pm.

  13. When do I register for fall classes?

Registration for fall classes will vary from college to college. You will receive more information on your college web site and on Day 2 of Orientation.

  14. What if I can't attend orientation due to circumstances beyond my control?

Indicate that you cannot attend on the orientation registration web site (or on the registration form and return it to our office). You must then contact your college for academic advising and fall registration.

  15. Where should I call to request accommodations for a disability?

    The Orientation office at (540) 231- 3284.
